Bobtail squid species

[edit]

This Bobtail squid is adorable, but is it really Euprymna scolopes? In most of the pictures I've seen, E. scolopes is light-colored and sort of whitish; the squid in your picture is a dark bluish-purple. It looks more like E. berryi to me... but I'm certainly no squidologist! If you're uncertain about the species too, maybe it would be better just to classify it as Euprymna sp. until an expert comes along? Vectornaut (talk) 02:43, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cuttlefish

[edit]

Hi there. Do you know what species of cuttlefish this is? Wonderful image by the way! Mgiganteus1 (talk) 09:54, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mgiganteus, thanks for the comment. I am pretty sure this is Broadclub Cuttlefish, Sepia latimanus. I will update the entry with this information. Nhobgood (talk) 19:39, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Comb jelly

[edit]

Hi Nick -- It is a nice picture, but your comb jelly is a little pyrosome (a colonial salp) and not a ctenophore. beroe (talk) 20:34, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Beroe. The image has been moved. Nick Nhobgood (talk) 01:12, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

East Timor

[edit]

Hi there. I notice East Timor has no fauna/ecology section. Do you have sources to write - or at least start - such a section? A couple of years ago, I wrote the equivalent section in Indonesia. regards --Merbabu (talk) 23:23, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I wonder, BTW, whether you'd consider being our invited judge for next week's Choice of the week? It would mean writing a short paragraph on Saturday or early Sunday, after our Saturday–Friday weekly window closes. Please let me know. Tony (talk) 12:52, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

White spotted jellyfish

[edit]

Hi, putting this pic at the top of F and A next week. Any story of how you came across the specimen? You were scuba diving, I presume. Just looking for one or two quotable fragments. Tony (talk) 06:52, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Tony ! Yes, this jellyfish was encountered while Scuba diving at approximately 12 meters depth off of a 45 meter wall on the East side of the mouth of Fort-Liberté bay in Northern Haiti. Local fishermen say the bay is a breeding area for jellyfish, attracting juvenile Loggerhead sea turtles that feed on the jellyfish. The fishermen also claim that the Mangrove complex in the southern part of the bay is home for Manatees. --Nhobgood (talk) 13:32, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Two species of sea urchin

Sea urchins are a group of spiny globular echinoderms which form the class Echinoidea. About 950 species live on the seabed, inhabiting all oceans and depth zones from the intertidal to 5,000 metres (16,000 feet; 2,700 fathoms). Their tests (hard shells) are round and spiny, typically from 3 to 10 centimetres (1 to 4 inches) across. Sea urchins move slowly, crawling with their tube feet, and sometimes pushing themselves with their spines. They feed primarily on algae but also eat slow-moving or sessile animals. Their predators include sea otters, starfish, wolf eels, and triggerfish. This photograph, taken off the northern coast of Haiti near Cap-Haïtien, shows two species of sea urchin: a West Indian sea egg (top) and a reef urchin (bottom).
